About Pain: Neck Pain
Pain in the neck area can signal several different types of injuries or disorders. Some are mild and brought on by poor posture. Others are more serious like problems with the cervical vertebrae. After a neck injury, some people mention that their heads feel heavier than ever before. Injury to the neck region can bring on many different symptoms. Pain that stems from the neck area can effect people in different ways:
1. Localized pain in the neck region
2. Muscle weakness in the legs
3. Trouble walking or a spastic gait
4. Stiffness and reduced range of motion in the neck
5. Shoulder, arm and hand pain or numbness
6. Weakness, tingling, numbness and slower reflexes in the extremities
What Can Cause Neck Pain?
There are many different things that can cause neck pain. Any injury to the muscles, ligaments or tendons of the neck can bring on pain. Falling asleep in a bad position can cramp the neck muscles and irritate nerve endings. Slumping over a computer long-term can freeze the neck muscles, pinch nerves and cause pain.
Some people develop neck pain from stress and excess worry. They may have a tumor. Any spinal problems like herniated cervical disks can trigger bouts of pain.
What Can I Do To Ease My Neck Pain Symptoms?
Try to stay active and keep up your regular daily activities, including going to work. Staying in bed isn't necessary. If you have a cervical collar, try not to wear it longer than one or two days. Neck pain typically goes away within a week and isn't usually serious.
Consult your physician for neck pain lasting longer than one week. Chronic neck pain may require the services of a specialist like a physiotherapist, chiropractor or physical therapist. Remember to use correct posture. You can also try exercises:
1. Slowly bend your head one inch to each side.
2. Stretch your chin down towards your chest and hold for 10 seconds.
Gentle massage, heat and ice compresses can relieve inflammation and muscle cramping. Apply heat/ ice to the painful area for 10-15 minutes every few hours. Taking an anti-inflammatory medication can help.
Smart Ways To Prevent Neck Pain
The best way to prevent neck pain is to avoid staying in one position too long. Take frequent breaks. Use good body mechanics when lifting heavy objects. Don't reach for heavy objects overhead and hold them far from the body. Lift with your legs or ask for help. Use ergonomic office furniture and equipment. Use supportive pillows and good posture even when sleeping.
